Without Nixon, would China still be a 3rd world hellhole today?

If Nixon had never opened up China to trading with the US, and giving them all our manufacturing jobs, would China still be a poor, weak and overpopulated 3rd world dump? would they of found another way of making money so they could fund their military buildup and become the next "super power"?
